2020 was a challenging year for Melbournians, but a silver lining was the city embracing outdoor dining. We were delighted to help the team at Auction Rooms create a thriving extended outdoor dining space occupying the car spaces in front of this Melbourne institution. The space created provides a place for the residents of North Melbourne to return to the steets, and enjoy each others company after a long locked-down winter.

 

Integrated planters take inspiration from the work of the American furniture maker Donald Judd and enrich the public realm with an array of native plant species. Recycled timber fence palings are used to form the enclosure of the space. Flexible furniture arrangements allow for COVID-safe dining, with the opportunity to increase density as the

 

We are hopeful that this space will become a permanent fixture in Melbourne – enriching street life while prioritising the pedestrian experience.
