AUSTRALIAN PAVILION
STATUS
Competition
LOCATION
Venice, Italy
This project proposes a new Australian pavilion for the Venice Bienalle. The project celebrates the isolation and disconnection of Australia by representing the exhibition space as a raised faceted black box disconnected from the Giardini which continues beneath. Apertures through the cantilevered exhibition space define smaller galleries , provide light to both the gallery and the covered piazza and explore the contrasting perceptions of the sky resultant of the Australian and Italian suburban morphologies.
Structurally, the project is conceived as an optimised steel box truss – the form of which influences the articulation of the black façade. The façade acts performatively as a type of trombe wall; facilitating natural heating and cooling of the gallery space.
