Fitzroy House represents a thoughtful alteration and addition to a once-neglected workers cottage nestled in the vibrant heart of Fitzroy. Situated within a densely populated urban environment, this project transforms the existing structure into an inner-city sanctuary, all while adhering to a modest budget. The design prioritizes both functionality and aesthetics, creating a harmonious living space that invites natural light and offers a retreat from the hustle and bustle of city life.

At the core of the living area is a striking raked ceiling and clerestory window, which not only enhances the sense of space but also floods the room with abundant northern daylight. This feature, combined with warm plywood lining throughout, fosters an inviting atmosphere that feels both cozy and modern. The careful choice of materials promotes a sense of warmth and comfort, creating an environment that encourages relaxation and social connection.

To pay homage to the cottage's history, bricks salvaged from the original dwelling are repurposed to line the rear courtyard, preserving the memory of the former structure. This project exemplifies a modest yet impactful renovation that enhances the livability and sustainability of a dilapidated terrace home while integrating modern design elements with elements of the past.
